The Your Part Matters Quote Database

Welcome! Entries are mostly listed in the order in which I posted them. Because the database is updated almost daily, there’s a nice hodge-podge of topics and authors on every page. If you just want to see the latest bits of wisdom, simply bookmark this page and come back every so often.

If you want more order than that, you have lots of options:

  • Author. Use the last name index on the right-hand side of this page to find who you want. For some authors, you will find you get several pieces of wisdom. Same last names will return multiple authors (Eleanor Roosevelt and Franklin D. Roosevelt, for example).
  • Topic. Use the topic index on the left-hand side to navigate. Many topic searches will result in quotes from several authors.
  • Search. The entire database is searchable. The search box on this page will search only the quotation database; if you want to search the entire site, use the search box on the main blog pages. The quotes you’ve searched for will appear directly under this introduction.

He made me play a song for him once with one finger. I was playing it with a lot of flash, and he said, “Wait a minute. I just want to hear the song.” I’d taper it out and cool it more and more, but finally he grabbed one finger and said, “Play me the song with this finger!” Now, that’s hard to do. You can play Moon River with one finger, no problem. But try and play some funk tune, with no melody and no real content, with one finger. You can’t do it.

~ David Foster, relating a conversation with Quincy Jones
